Sea World

After a lengthy drive from Katoomba to the Gold Coast we went straight to bed, shattered. It's here in the Gold Coast where the major theme parks can be found in Australia and we were going to spend a few days here. The first of the big parks was the nearest, Seaworld.

Despite it's name the park has no affiliation with the Sea World parks in the US, so you'll be pleased to hear there's no Shamu nonsense here!

The park actually started out as a water ski park and there are still nods to it with ramps in the lake a clear sign that the shows still continue.

When did Roger Ramjet become a pirate?

The animatronic pelicans were great, it's just a shame that none of them were eating pigeons like the ones in London do.

Poor Patrick was unable to walk to his signing and had to be driven there. (It must have been so hot in that costume)

The park has a fairly good flume

This poor dolphin was trying desperately to get to the buoy but he couldn't reach it. I resisted the urge to hop over and help him out. I'd have been kicked out of the park for sure.

The Jet Rescue coaster is a low to the ground launched beaut of a ride with really comfortable jet ski themed trains. Despite the stringent rules (stuff in lockers & no glasses) the ride was really good and both myself and Martin were in agreement that this is what Alton Towers should have built instead of Rita. You don't have to go high to have a great ride.

The other coaster is Sea Viper. A Vekoma corkscrew ride with modified seating, I think made by Kumbak. The restraints prevented you from raising your arms and in Martin's case unfortunately prevented him from riding at all. I couldn't understand why they'd made this change to the ride although a friend did notice that there's a low monorail track section that could be hit if the arms were raised, so perhaps that's why.

In this tank you can stroke the rays. Just don't forget what happened to Steve Irwin.

Average carousel.

We ended our trip here with a mandatory visit to the penguin house. Penguins are cool and the extreme air condition meant we were too.

Seaworld is an OK park with the Jet Rescue ride easily being the best thing in the park. For the Gold Coast leg of the trip we were using a hire car. The parks are well signed and easy to drive to.
