Taman Safari Indonesia II

Surabaya is the second largest city in Indonesia and doesn't appear to get many western tourists as the only others we saw were 2 business men on our flight. We were spending a couple of days with a plan of attack of spending one day visiting the parks to the south and another day visiting the parks to the north.

Approximately 100 minutes south of Surabaya is Taman Safari II a large Safari Park, situated on the side of the Gunung Arjuna volcano. It's one of 2 safari parks in Indonesia and you know you're getting close when you find your car being taken off the main road and through arches of fake elephant tusks.

Taman Rekreasi is Indonesian for "recreation park" and the amusement park can be found within the safari park grounds.

The rides are mostly for the little kids but there is one rollercoaster for those that are interested.

There are also some animal shows, although we weren't interested in them. You've also got an idea of how busy the park was today.

A rather sad looking polyp.

The coaster is a powered reindeer themed ride that flew around fast enough to throw us into the sides of our seats.

Impressive Ganesha statue

Real parrots.

That building in the background looks way too good for this park.

It was a uniquely themed dark ride offering an Indonesian take on the ghost train attraction. All the theming looked home made offering a unique take on the ride.

More live parrots, and a nice sign for the park.

The park offers elephant rides, which I thought was a little cruel and ironic for a safari park.

Taman Safari Indonesia II was one of the most remote parks I'd been to. For all of these Indonesian parks its best to hire a driver and have them take you there. There's no public transport I'm aware of that would get you here so it's really the only option. Being in the mountains the park is nicely shaded but still humid. When you do arrive at the main gate the armed guards will ask for Indonesian ID. Just state you're tourists and they'll let you through. Clearly this is a park that isn't visited by many tourists.
